500 Word Rationale

For my animation I decided to go with the Frankenstein story. I adapted my story around the idea of Frankenstein being a toy and the doctor being a toy maker, it starts off as the classic Frankenstein story with the “doctor” making his creation, with twist coming in later.

I feel good about the way I’ve gone around planning this project and feel that is has benefited the final outcome, there are quite a few areas which I would like to change or wish that I had done better. However There are certain areas that I feel I have greatly improved on since my last project. My modelling of the scene was of a much higher quality and I found better ways of texturing and lighting the scene making it look more realistic in the final render,

I found some of the animating challenging and some scenes in my animation don’t look quite right, the scene I’m most happy with though is the shelf scene as I feel I worked hard at getting the movement of the doctor right as he lifted Frankenstein onto them.

The characters themselves I was fairly happy with although they did have some minor glitches, that had I not rushed onto other parts could have been sorted pretty easily, this is something I have come to learn from this animation, is to not rush when it comes to certain areas and to work harder at the area I am having trouble with rather than making another task less important.

Although taking a while to do my rigging, when I eventually came to it I found it fairly easy to grasp, my main problem was the envelopes, I sorted these but due to some of my modelling there were certain areas of my characters that didn’t look right. As I said I now know to concentrate on important areas earlier in the process in order for later areas to work.

The project has helped me to think about my options for next year and I think I’m leaning more towards the side of visualisation. I’ve really enjoyed creating the scene for my animation and gaining more of an eye for detail, at the same time I think animation is a skill I don’t want to lose, I know in order to be better at it I must practise and hopefully with practise and time I will get better.

It has also helped me to realise the amount of effort and work I need to put in if I am going to achieve anything by the end of the 3 years here. Even though I feel tired and challenged from this project I know there are times where I could have worked harder to achieve a greater result.

In saying all of this I still feel that the final animation does reflect how I envisaged it when I first came up with the story, and skills I have learnt throughout this second term have helped me to do that.
